In Progress
In this research we want to keep and eye on the lng term changes of the land. We aim to make a Drone map minimum once a year. We'll also let you know what tools we use in case you want to do it yourself. FYI: We made a 3D heightmap with a drone before here. https://community.projectkamp.com/research/can-we-make-an-elevation-height-map-of-the-land

Making the map

Published 2yPublished over 2 years ago
Here is how we made our first flat map It's made with Pix4D mapper https://www.pix4d.com/product/pix4dmapper-photogrammetry-software How it works 1. Install their app on your phone, that controls your drone. 2. You draw the surface area you need 3. Tweak the settings to what fits your batteries. The lower you go the more detail but the longer it takes 4. When all setup the drone flies a pattern above te land. 3.Afterwards hundereds of images that are saved on the drone are stitched together using their software on the computer 4. Map comes out pretty good but requires some photoshopping. Would reccomend to fly during a cloudy day where the shades are consistent.

New mapping method

Published 2yPublished over 2 years ago
Last time we used pix4Dmapper. It worked quite well but had a lot of settings to configure and takes time to stitch all the images together on our laptops. There is another service called "drone deploy" https://www.dronedeploy.com/ This one also has an app that flies the drone but afterwards the images are uploaded to their servers and they stitch them together. It's more user friendly since you dont have to deal with all the settings. That said the stitching came out a bit rougher. We used the free trail version How it works 1. Install the app 2. Make a Drone Plan 3. Upload images to server 4. Wait a few hours to get result 5. Export as ,tiff .jpg or .pdf 6. Photoshop a bit the errors out.

Basekamp with newly added storage container 3. Cleaned up lagoon 4. Little pathways made to clear native trees 5. Cleaned road for fire exit 6. Pigtrailer with new road on the middle land

Map Season 4 Summer

Published 1y. Edited 1yPublished over 1 year ago. Last edit over 1 year ago
As usual, we also made our land's drone map for season 4. For this occasion, we used the same method as above and tried using the DJI air 2s for better image quality. However, it kept presenting a bug during the initialization of the drone and forums also shared the same problem, so it seems to need an update from the software provider. In the end, we did this map using the DJI Mavic Pro as before. Here are some tips to get it on your first try: 1. Use a recent iPhone model to avoid any bugs. Android had a bug during the battery switch that didn't let you resume the mission, so it was not possible to finish the map. 2. Make sure to have 3 fully charged batteries for the drone and a fully charged phone. 3. The best weather condition is cloudy to avoid shades in the final image. 4. This video was useful to learn how to use the software: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7nzRAqRmnI&t=694s&ab_channel=TheDroneLife You can download the full HD map in the download link :)
